07: Magic Dolls

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil.” I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries.

That sounded awfully stuffy. Does my master really begin all his essays that way? Let me try again…

Despite all our big kingdoms and all that, Lavato is still a world filled with things no one has any clue about.

My job is to research these specialized topics, like Dragons and what not.

My name is Crow Ohbel, assistant scribe to the Kingdom of Folrart.

My master ran off saying, “I must take up a temporary residence in the Duchy of Crest to adequately research the documents recently uncovered there. Until I return, I’m putting you in charge of my periodic essays.”

He can’t tell me these things all of a sudden. I have plans too, you know.

I guess it’s not worth complaining about, so let me just get into the point of the essay right away.

Hey, I’m a busy guy with things to do, you know.

Anyway, I’ll be writing about Magic Dolls.

Magic Dolls are an elaborate form of golem that become popular among the wealthy shortly before the start of the War of the Sun and Moon.

Golems are made out of inorganic matter…such as rock, iron, wood and other materials that don’t have a soul. Wizards use magic spells to imbue permanent animation on their constructs, and then the golems can take commands and complete simple tasks. More advanced ones can even operate autonomously from their creator with some success.

Doll masterBefore the Magic Dolls became popular, there were only bulky statues made out of rock or scary looking metal jaguars around.

But then a single gifted alchemist appears and blows away the whole history of golems with her creations.

That gifted one was female alchemist Sumer, who was called the Doll Master for obvious reasons.

We have our own names for them now, but back then all her creations were just known as Magic Dolls. As for what trick Sumer used to make them better than golems… well, there are rumors but no one knows for sure. We do know that Magic Dolls were a whole new level of golem when it came to thinking and decision making and acting autonomously. Anyone who’s ever spent any time with a Magic Doll knows there’s something about them that makes them almost seem… human. It’s kinda creepy.

The Alchemist who Created the Magic Dolls

From the beginning Magic Dolls were subdivided into different types, depending on what their purpose was.

Sumer did not seem to be after power by developing her elaborate golems, she released them as simple products to be sold all over the world.

Magic Doll vanillaThese Magic Doll golems were all made for serving around the house and similar jobs, except for one type known as Combat Magic Dolls.

Some of the wealthy wanted the Magic Dolls for their own purposes and paid extremely high prices for them.

In no time, Sumer was amassing large sums of money on her own.

Her most famous patron was Lady Belfyna, a noblewoman from Crest who placed a large order for Combat Magic Dolls to make an army for the War of the Sun and Moon.

Normally, if an unaffiliated wizard received such an order, they would never accept the job. The political trouble of supplying a single noble with the military power of a kingdom wouldn’t be worth the trouble.

But this woman named Sumer produced the Combat Magic Dolls without a second thought, and delivered them right to Belfyna’s door.

Sumer didn’t even catch any political heat for it, but that’s more a lesson in Duchy history so I’ll leave the details to my master.

In short, Sumer designed a number of new varieties of Magic Dolls for use in total warfare.

No one questioned her, but that probably is because she had connections of the villainous sort with those who were ranked above Belfyna, like Annarose and maybe even the infamous Elgandi.

If that’s true, then I figure there’s no question that the Magic Dolls were planned from the very beginning to be tools for spreading war all across the lands of Lavato.

Okay, that’s enough about Sumer. My job is to research things like Magic Dolls, not historical persons.

There actually weren’t any specific Dolls called Combat Magic Dolls at the time. So, let me go over some of the categories that did exist.

Magic Dolls Types

First off we have the most basic, general purpose Magic Dolls. These Magic Dolls were everywhere, and most of the domestic types were based off of them.

When they’re equipped with their fighting arm, they are generally referred to as generic Combat Magic Dolls.

These Magic Dolls are still used for self-defense purposes and they are highly regarded for their versatility and thinking abilities. The right hand is a attachment and you can change them out to switch from attack mode to normal mode, so it’s really convenient.

Those claws are pretty nasty, too. Even with a standard power Magic Doll body, they’re so sharp the Magic Doll can drive them right through a reinforced steel door.

And here’s a fun fact. The creator, Sumer, used her own face as a model for the standard Magic Doll.

Seems unfair that a girl with such a cute face ended up becoming a legendary “twisted witch,” hated and feared by everyone.

I feel little sorry for her.

MD meleeNext we have Magic Doll -Melee-, I guess.Next we have Magic Doll -Melee-, I guess.

This girl has a stronger body then the general-purpose type. Basically, her selling point is her strength.

But in exchange, each doll is a lot more expensive… I guess that’s how it goes.

Many of the owners say, “She’s more unique than the other Magic Dolls, so maintenance is a hassle.”

The difficulty is in the Melee type’s fighting arm. Sumer used her alchemy to liquefy metals, then added magic so that her Dolls could shape the metal and cause it to become rigid in the form of any type of stabbing weapon.

The systems to operate and maintain the liquid metal is pretty complicated, even for a Magic Doll, so maintenance is key and also difficult.

Because of that and its price, it’s a rare Magic Doll these days. Actually, the number in circulation was always pretty low.

MD SupportOur next girl is Magic Doll -Support-, often called the Magic Doll -Support Magician- series.

The big deal here is that these were the first golems of any kind that could use magic spells.

Depending on the type of magic spells entered into the Doll, she could do just about anything.

Sure, magic is something that is indigenous to all living creatures but it should be impossible for something without a soul to accomplish. Still, Support Dolls could do it with the help of some mysterious system Sumer called the Magic Enhancer.

This was Sumer’s second huge breakthrough, and in theory it could even allow a human unskilled in magic to be able to use it as well.

I’ll go into detail when I get to talking about the construction process a little more, but the Magic Engine was the prototype for Sumer’s final and biggest invention, the Soul System. Apparently, it resonates with the world in and around it just like any living soul does.

Hmm, maybe that doesn’t make any sense to the average reader.

Later I’ll try and come up with a better way to explain it, but for now I’m moving on.

With the ability to use any type of magic spell loaded into them, the Support type is handy in any situation.

In fact, this is the series you often see around, maybe even more than the general purpose type.

The only downside is that their complicated mental structure gives them all kinds of mental quirks.

Other Magic Dolls are a lot better at making decisions and reacting to the situation.

Support types drop pots; they burn food…Something like that happens every now and then.

Though I’ve heard some bizarre people that like these kinds of Magic Dolls just for that reason…

Oh man, it seems like I’m starting to run out of pages.

I guess I’ll stop around here for now.

The next time I’d like to write about the other types of Magic Dolls that were invented after the War of the Sun and Moon started.

You can pretty much say that Fencer types and Grappler types are specifically Belfyna customs because those series were so low in numbers.

Let’s call the next chapter the Lavato Biographies: Magic Dolls – Custom Types from the War of the Sun and Moon.

Something tells me my no-good master won’t be back anytime soon…

06: Mecernary Nation Heierrat

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil”. I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries. In this, my latest essay, I will be discussing the country founded by Gun Princess Yuni and her companions: Mercenary Nation Heierrat.

The History of Mercenary Nation Heierrat

Previously, in my essay on the Gun Princess, I explained that Mercenary Nation Heierrat was a country made up of bounty hunters, villagers and ex-soldiers who had gathered around Yuni.

But how did a disorganized group like this end up founding a nation? That is the matter I’m prepared to discuss today.

First of all, what made Yuni think of establishing Heierrat and why?

princess yuni

To make the situation understandable, I need to first explain the kind of people who gathered around Yuni, and what their feelings were.

As the stories say, Yuni had a friendly disposition, and even treated strangers as if they were close companions. She also had a habit of getting involved in other people’s affairs, especially if they were in any kind of trouble. If it wasn’t for her good nature, she most likely would have been considered quite a meddler.

She ended up getting herself involved in situations where most others would rather just look the other way. As a result, she ended up confronting difficult problems and helping people with their troubles. Her reputation to grew and grew, until her name was known by everyone in the wastelands. Since Yuni could not ignore anyone who was in trouble, she often gave away the money from her bounties. Usually this was to orphans, who where in the same situation she was once in. This particular story became very famous, and so Yuni was known for her kindness above all else.

From an outsider’s perspective, it might seem like the mercenaries and poor people who gathered around Yuni were just looking for money. However, there was a strong bond formed between these people and Yuni. Each and every one she saved would do anything to save her in return, or at least help her in any way they could.

The legends are always certain to recount the building of Castle Heierrat on land given without compensation to Yuni by a kindly old man. However, a large amount of the funding that made the country’s founding possible was actually generated by a shrewd financier, Rosso Rinbus.

With all of this support and her companions united by the idea of finding a place for all the orphans of the Wasteland to live, Yuni’s path was clear. Yuni decided to build, in her words, “a place where those without homes could live in peace.” We also have records of her reciting on many occasions, a certain passage by the man she considered a father, Ben MacLachlan:

To make a difference, mercenaries cannot just be like the destructive winds of a storm, even to blow away evil. They must be like the spring breezes that carry seeds to grow, seeds of happiness for the people.

Yuni and her companions put all their heart into shaping Heierrat, with the goal of making these words true. Finally, after her group of mercenaries had grown and grown, they officially announced the name of their country as Mercenary Nation Heierrat.

Because of Yuni’s uncanny ability to make connections, gain followers and earn the help of talented people, a number of rumors began circulating. Some suspected she was using mind controlling enchantments, or even that she was an otherworldly creature.

Unfortunately, history has left me with no hard evidence to disprove these rumors completely. Considering the documents we do have, myself and other historians are at least certain that she established Heierrat for her comrades and followers, and not for any duplicitous purpose.

In my opinion, that is enough to consider the one named Yuni a hero and a force for good in our history.

Is it a Mercenary Nation or a Mercenary Kingdom?

Because of the nature of mercenaries, it is often forgotten that their nation of Heierrat was established as a monarchy. Because of that, it’s technically a Kingdom and should be ruled by a monarch or King. Of course, history tells us that Gun Princess Yuni established the nation, and she was never called a King or Queen.

So why is Heierrat a Kingdom?

For much of history, this was a mystery. Only recently, researches fiertehave uncovered the documents establishing Heierrat as Kingdom in the name of a King.

The existence of the first king of Heierrat had never been discussed outside Yuni’s close circle of companions, as far as we know. The king that Heierrat was established under was non other than Ben MacLachlan, Yuni’s gun master and Fierte’s foster father.

But how could Ben MacLachlan be the king of Heierrat?

The only explanation is that this was done to reflect the feelings of Yuni and the entire nation, for they wished that Ben could be their king.

Unfortunately, that would be a wish that could never come true, as earlier Ben was killed in a fight with a wanted criminal.

As a nation, Heierrat would never have an opportunity to show their feelings to Ben, but the country itself was made by Yuni and the others to bring Ben’s feelings to all people.

It is generally agreed that to honor his name, they established Heierrat as a Kingdom, and established Ben as the king for all time. As for Yuni, she titled herself Princess because she always considered herself to be Ben’s daughter.

However, as a community, historians have some doubt about things being so simple. Our research is still ongoing about this matter.

For example, what if Ben MacLachlan didn’t really die back then? This is a personal theory of mine, and an entirely new path of inquiry anyone has yet to pursue. Well, it is my theory, so I suppose it would be up to me.

The Mercenary Nation’s Forces

Now Yuni had many supporters and powerful allies, but on the very same year that Heierrat was established, the War of the Sun and Moon broke out.

At that time, many nearby and neighboring countries were worried about this coincidence in timing. After all, a country made up entirely of mercenaries and ex-soldiers would be able to create the perfect army for invasion purposes.

While it was true that Heierrat’s army was smaller compared to the active troops maintained by their neighboring countries, almost all of their soldiers were heavily experienced in combat, and a large number of the citizenry were of mercenary origin and could take up swords at a moment’s notice.

From the perspective of other kingdoms, it’s easy to see why Heierrat’s army was considered a threat.

To ensure that her country would not be labeled a threat, Yuni herself served as an envoy and visited each nearby kingdom to convince them that her army was only for protection from attacking forces. She vowed Heierrat would never use its army for the purposes of an invasion.

She insisted that their army would not disband, however, in light of the fact that Heierrat could be attacked at any time.

Yuni was eventually able to convince her neighbors with the help of several allies, especially from the Solar Kingdom. It was the Solar Kingdom that entered into a treaty with Heierrat first, and the other neighboring countries soon followed.

What makes this treaty so important was that as part of it, Yuni promised that the Mercenary Nation would live up to its name, and she would hire out her army to any country in danger of invasion.

This treaty was invoked for the first time when the Solar Kingdom of Folrart needed help from the Mercenary Nation during the Battle for the Holy Realm.

Heierrat’s military was immediately mobilized whenever it needed to protect weaker countries and the peace of all Lavato.

However, according to our records the Heierrat army refused to help one kingdom invade another, even if asked by one of their allies. They only marched into battle to protect.

In fact, just after the Battle for the Holy Realm the Solar Kingdom launched a counterattack against the Duchy of Crest. They asked for support from the Mercenary Nation, but Yuni refused and her country remained neutral.

In this way, with the birth of the Mercenary Nation each kingdom gained access to increased military power. At the same time, they also felt threatened by Heierrat’s influence.

Because of Heierrat’s role and way of thinking, the Emperor of the Silver Sun, Verlaat, knew he couldn’t create his empire without first putting the Mercenary Nation under his control. That’s why he began with an invasion of Heierrat.

As you can see, the Mercenary Nation played an important role in international affairs throughout history, and still does today.

Somehow, it seems that Heierrat has never been manipulated from within by evil forces. I believe this is because ‘mercenaries cannot just be like the destructive winds of a storm’ and instead they ‘must be like the spring breezes that carry seeds to grow.’ Even today, these words are taken to heart by the people of the Mercenary Nation.

To continue this series of lectures, I will be passing the pen over to one of my assistants, Crow Ohbel. He’s been researching magical constructs, and he’ll be discussing the so-called ‘Magic Dolls.’

I encourage you to give his work your attention, just as you would mine.

The next installment of the Lavato Biographies will cover Magic Dolls.

11: Dragons

The wizards of Lavato teach that the world can be divided into forces known as the six elements:

Light
Darkness
Fire
Wood
Wind
Water

Each of these is an integral part of what makes up the world, and it’s said that every person place or thing in said world can be divided amongst these six attributes.

The life forms most heavily influenced by those six elements are called the Dragon Kin, the mightiest beings in Lavato.

Holy Dragons
Dragons of the Mercurial Night
Fire Dragons
Earth Dragons
Wind Dragons
Water Dragons

You can see clearly that each dragon type is connected to one of the six elements, but it’s intriguing to note dragons are one of the very few creatures that are so clearly divided.

— Belford Publishing / Ryecal Illustrated Monster Encyclopedia

There, you see how starting off with a stuffy quote like that gives your essay more legitimacy? To my regular readers, long time no write! Everyone else, I hope you stick around for more. Your author is Crow Ohbell, assistant scribe to the Kingdom of Folrart! This time around I’m writing about Dragons.

The Dragon Kin are said to be closer to being gods than any other life forms in the world of Lavato. They’re even said to be stronger than anything else here, too. They look like… well it varies. I guess most of them are similar to lizard-type reptiles. I mean, there are a bunch of different dragons, and some don’t look a thing like the others.

Also, the Dragon Kin are what they call colossal. That means they’re big. Friggin’ huge! Put it this way, they’re so big that it’s not uncommon to hear reports of a Dragon that’s as big as an entire castle.

Another important thing to keep in mind about Dragon Kin is they’re extremely smart. Dragons apparently understand human speech, and they’ve been known to do things like answer peoples’ questions and even their wishes.

Of course, that might be the kind of thing that just comes up in legends. It’s rare that a Dragon will speak to people using human speech. What I mean is that even though they could apparently talk to us, I suppose they don’t want to talk to anyone they deem unworthy. That’s why the Dragons use a language called “Dragonese” to converse.

Amongst scholars like me, there are linguists who can use Dragonese in conversation. Of course, by “like me” I mean “not me.” I’m no good with things that complicated.

So that’s the basics on Dragon Kin, but as was stated at the beginning of this, they’re a mysterious set of creatures that can be divvied up according to the six elements. According to research left behind by a witch named Fellana, there’s evidence that even humans can be categorized in this same way.

But then, as you’re aware, the influences of the six elements are completely invisible to human eyes.

When you think of it that way, you could say that the ability to observe such differences is another one of the Dragon’s are marvelous powers.

Well, wyverns can also see the influences of the elements, but they’re a sub-species of Dragon Kin so maybe that’s be to expected. Now, I’ll break the six types of Dragon Kin for you.

Holy Dragons

holy dragonIf you see fluffy body hair and no wings, that’s the sure sign of a Holy Dragon. They appear in folklore as deities who bring blessings and occasionally as local guardian spirits. Not long ago, they were outright worshipped as divine envoys.

They’re not very warlike, and if I had to make a comparison, I’d say they have the personalities of peaceful recluses.

Since the element they personify is light, they are a type of Dragon that seeks guidance and harmony.

mercurial dragonDragons of the Mercurial Night

If you’ve ever heard a legend of a bizarre dragon that appears suddenly in the night and inspires widespread panic, that would be a Dragon of the Mercurial Night.

They strike fear into the hearts of people and animals, and each Dragon takes a different eerie form.

In addition, the breath they spew out is highly toxic. It can kill most people in a few moments. This is the kind of creature that’s directly associated with fear and death. As the element these dragons personify is darkness, they are associated with negative aspects like chaos and frustration.

Their name is a little weird, but that’s really the impression you get looking at these things.

fire dragonFire Dragons

Here’s the big one, the most popular. It breathes fire, and it’s a hunter that tracks its prey from above using its enormous wings. This is the Fire Dragon. When you say “Dragon,” this is the image that comes to the minds of the people of Lavato. Why is that the case, you ask? That’s because there was once a time when all across the lands Fire Dragons would snatch people away and make a meal of them.

For that reason, the official records of many great heroes describe Dragons appearing, fighting with the hero, and then finally being slain. In almost all cases these records are referring to Fire Dragons.

Flaming breath is a symbol of destruction for most people, and Fire Dragons are destruction incarnate as far as popular beliefs go.

The element they personify is fire. They’re the type Dragon that takes the first step in giving rise to something new through destruction and rebirth. Perhaps many heroes got to become heroes by taking their own step forward and overcoming this trial?

earth dragonEarth Dragons

Huge jaws and quick movements signify an Earth Dragon type, the mightiest tyrant among any creature that ever walked the land. Their fighting strength ranks 1st or 2nd amongst the Dragon Kin, and they’re so strong that it’s said there’s never been a living creature who could take one on alone.

They’re not very famous as Dragons, though. One possible reason is that their habitat is limited, and they don’t exist outside dense jungles at all.

Well, if Dragons like these did live near people, I figure humanity would be extinct at this point. They personify the element of wood, and they express such transformations as growth and explosive power.

water dragonWater Dragons

These dragons have long, snake-like bodies. Water Dragons are unique in that they can only survive underwater. I just can’t deal with these things at all. They really creep me out personally.

Well, I guess I don’t have to worry about seeing them, they only live underwater, and they have even less to do with people than other Dragon Kin.

Mermaids apparently encounter them a lot, and treat them like escorts sometimes. These Dragons display the water’s elemental qualities of transition and serenity, but I think it’s strange to have a Dragon that can’t leave the water at all.

Wind Dragons

The Dragon Kin associated with the element of wind is associated with wandering and adventure. This is the Wind Dragon type.

As their nature suggests, Wind Dragons don’t remain in any one place, but instead keep moving around. They are also known to be able to fly above the clouds indefinitely, which explains why they are almost never seen. What do they look like, and what powers do they have?

Even the basic facts are unknown, and many mysteries surround them. However, there are surviving records that indicate Wind Dragons once had frequent dealings with people. This makes me think this type of Dragon actually has a sociable personality. So why are they never seen? I can’t help but think that something happened in the past that led to the extinction of the Wind Dragons.

So then, those are the six types as they correspond to the six elements. In addition to these six types of Dragon Kin, there’re also various sub-species, ancient types, and some more unusual variations as well.

There’s even some so overwhelming, it’s said they were made by the gods personally. These are Lavato’s guardian deities, the Dragon Emperors. Flame Emperor Allind, who destroyed the great empire of Gabilab in a single night; Dark Emperor Zu-jyuva, who was the reason why the infinitely formless, wicked warlock Beslaford destroyed himself; Water Emperor Legrye, who appears in mermaid lore as a monarch of the seas who washes the world of dry land away; and Holy Emperor Retear, emperor among Dragon Emperors, who took part in the conflict against the Envoy of Chaos. These four have their roots in legend, and I was just thinking, wouldn’t it be cool to talk about them some? Of course, I don’t think master would approve!

10: The Angels – Four Sisters Who Serve the Four Gods

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil.” I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries. In this chapter I will discuss the four angels of each sphere.

Batora was defeated by the gods and heroes of old; forced to return to its own world. However, the gods of Lavato had exhausted their power. In order to prepare for the time Batora when would reappear, they decided to return from whence they came. They left behind the four most powerful of their number behind in a deep sleep to watch over Lavato. In addition, they created a Divine Child who could influence the world in their stead. The Divine Child’s first thought was to create beings able to travel the world, bringing the words of the gods to all people. And so, the Divine Child decided to summon the four gods from their slumber and speak with them.

Ah, it’s been some time since I’ve been able to write! This is Crow Ohbell, assistant to Lazard Bauses. I know my introduction was a story about the birth of Karite, the Divine Child. However, my topic this time is really the Emissaries. In this story, Karite brings forth four sisters who are Angels, or Emissaries. But maybe you already knew that much?

Eldest daughter, “Angel of the Sorrowful Night and Souls” Noirweiden
Second daughter, “Angel of Birth and the Guiding Light of the Sun” Weissvogel
Third daughter, “Angel of Gaia and the Zealous Flame” Rougeerst
Fourth daughter, “Angel of the Enveloping Sky and the Sea of Life” Bulerigid

They each serve one of the four gods that grant power to Alteil. Noirweiden serves Lawtia. Weissvogel serves Refess. Rougeerst serves Gowen. Bulerigid serves Falkow. For whatever reason, each of them sports an image akin to the god they serve. This brings us to the topic of Karite’s first task, the creation of the Emissaries.

Eldest daughter • Noirweiden

The four gods all gathered together, and lent Karite their ears.

“Oh four gods, thank you for appearing to me here.
Now, there is but one reason why I requested your presence.
Let us create servants, who will act as your hands and your feet.
Your servants, who will rightfully convey the intent of you, the Four Gods, to the people of Lavato.”

So said Karite. Then Lawtia, who had appeared uninterested as she listened, spoke up first.
“Karite, child of the gods. Create servants, you say?
Then I request a servant with the same appearance as mine.
A warden of souls, with black wings. Also, a governess of death.”
“I hear you. So, Lawtia. Your desire is an Emissary with the same appearance as yours?”
“Indeed, Divine Child.”

weissvogelTherefore the firstborn was, naturally, the eldest daughter, Noirweiden. She’s said to be an Angel with long hair and a long lance, appearing at night and calling out to souls. Legends also say she appears before those attempting suicide, addressing the importance of life and preventing them from killing themselves. As she was the first to be born, her power is very strong. The stories say she’s been endowed with the power of immortality, never to die. In this tale, she was made in the very image of the goddess Lawtia, but here’s a little thing to note about Noirweiden. She actually has multiple forms, and none of them are fixed. Did you know that? Her most famous form, and the one the people of Lavato know well, is the beautiful long-haired woman. But she also appears in various legends as the “golden-haired boy”, the “winged wolf”, and the “eyeless old woman”. Which form of hers is real? I can’t really say I know, but maybe there’s some reason why she has to hide her true form.

Second daughter • Weissvogel

Karite made the first Emissary in the guise of Lawtia. “Your name is Noirweiden. You were created to be the Emissary of the goddess Lawtia. Henceforth, please work with Lawtia and your unborn sisters, and righteously lead the people of Lavato.”

Noirweiden listened to Karite’s words, and slowly bowed her head. “I understand, Divine Child Karite. My mistress is Lawtia, the goddess who governs the nights and souls of Lavato.” She said this, and moved towards Lawtia. As Noirweiden drew near, Lawtia withdrew from the assembly. Lawtia disappeared, and Noirweiden remained there, kneeling. Then, Refess spoke to Karite.

“Karite, our beloved child. Will you also make an Emissary for me?” “Of course, mother Refess.” “The power of shining light, then. I choose as Emissary, a young lady noble and pure, who reveres the power of the sun I govern.” “I hear you, Refess. I will create the Emissary you desire.” “Do so, if you would.”

NoirweidenAnd so, it was Refess who desired an Emissary second, and thus was born the second daughter, Weissvogel.

She was given the power of purity, and it’s said that if you lay your eyes upon her, the ugliness in your mind will be washed away. Her task is to use that ability to increase the number of Refess’ adherents.

You know, I feel like it’s cheating to use divine manipulation to increase your followers, but maybe that’s just me? Also, there are lots of stories where she appears as a divine Angel destroying demons, so it looks like Refess keeps Weissvogel plenty busy.

Incidentally, the sword and shield she holds are the holy sword and shield used by White King Eyguina, who appears in the famous Lavato tale, “The Epic of Fordine”. As for which Emissary shows up the most in stories, it’s probably Weissvogel here. Although depending on the story, she’s sometimes portrayed as a stern, villainous character.

Third daughter • Rougeerst

And thus, the second Emissary was born.
“Maiden, you are the embodiment of a pure and noble soul. Your name is Weissvogel.
Be the hands and feet of your mother goddess Refess, and guide the people.”
Weissvogel hoisted her sword in her hand and spoke…
“I swear that I will guard my mistress Refess for all eternity,
and that I will convey her intent to all the people of Lavato!”
Immediately Refess spoke to Weissvogel, and told her something quietly.
Having heard what was said, Weissvogel bowed her head to the remaining three gods, then disappeared from that place.
“I’ve given Weissvogel a job to do post-haste. As my business here is also finished, I’ll be taking my leave.” With that, Refess disappeared as well.

“Those two beat me to the punch… What a mistake I’ve made.”
So said Gowen. Karite heard his voice, and turned toward him to ask…
“Father Gowen. Shall I make an Emissary for you, next?”
Gowen replied to Karite’s question with a nod.
“Mhm. I think I will have you create me a servant. She’s to have an eye for gathering the mighty,
those with the strength of the earth and nature, and a bow with which to catch them. That’s the kind of Emissary I want.”
“I hear you, Gowen. The Emissary you desire will be able to perceive power,
and hunt down those who possess it, as a hunter hunts prey?”
“That’s right.”

RougerestMy idea of Gowen is that he isn’t especially bright. That being said, the Emissary he wanted is the third daughter, Rougeerst. She’s usually said to be a cute girl, and seems like the type who talks so much it’s annoying.

I suppose it’s the duty of Emissaries to convey the words of the god or goddess they serve above all else, but what Gowen wanted was more like a hunter. As a result, it seems that generally she’s left to her own resources.

It follows that Rougeerst hasn’t received any discipline from anyone, so she’s out there completing her master’s tasks any way she sees fit. By the way, it’s said that Rougeerst’s bow has the power to grant wishes. Well, huh. That’s why she usually appears in paintings and books with hearts all over her, like she’s Cupid or something.

Rougeerst doesn’t actually have anything to do with love…but I guess that won’t really matter to the younger crowd.

Fourth daughter • Bulerigid

In response to Gowen’s appeal, the third Emissary was born.
“Incarnation of nature, Emissary of Gowen. Your name is Rougeerst.
You have eyes to see the strength your master wants. You will use them to guide the people.”
After the newly born Rougeerst flew all around energetically, she came before Karite and answered…
“Sure! You got it, Lord Karite! I promise I won’t let Lord Gowen down!”
Having seen this, Gowen asked Karite…
“This is my servant?”
“Indeed.”, answered Karite without exhibiting a shred of doubt.
“Hey, Lord Gowen, hey. What do I do? Maybe go look around on the surface for people you’d like?
Hmmm, yeah, I’m off for the surface!”
Said Rougeerst, and without waiting for an answer from Gowen, she took off for the ground below.
Afterwards, Gowen too disappeared from that place.
Thus, Falkow was the only one of the four left.

“This will be the last of them. Falkow, I will now make the final Emissary.”
Falkow, deep in thought, had been watching the situation unfold. She now answered slowly…
“The power to obscure the future, that is what we want. An emissary who changes, worries, and searches for answers, just as people do.”
“I hear you. An Emissary who grows, with the same future as the people. That is what you wish?”
“Mhm.”

Bulerigid“After all that, you were only left for last because you kept quiet?” thinks Falkow’s Emissary, the fourth daughter Bulerigid. Traditionally she’s represented as a small child, one who in a story frets and keeps arriving at the wrong answer, but in the end, discovers the right one. In many cases, she’s painted as exactly that kind of human child. Why did Falkow choose this kind of Emissary? It’s a complete mystery, and a tough one to solve.

However, some of her powers as an Emissary are dreadful, and legend has it that she once flooded a city where a certain tyrant dwelt. I guess she’s scary when she’s angry. Maybe because she’s very young, or maybe because she takes after her mistress, she doesn’t speak very much, and her questions are like riddles. Or so it has been said.

Regarding Emissaries

The final Emissary was born, the one Falkow wanted.
“Young Emissary. As Emissary of Falkow, you will watch over people, and aspire to even greater prosperity.
Your name is Bulerigid.”
The final Emissary then turned to Karite and replied…
“I understand. For Mistress Falkow, I will investigate people,
and watch over them so that they might follow a better path.”
Then, Falkow addressed Bulerigid…
“Bulerigid my dear, watch people closely, and learn.
Investigate the powers only people have, the ones we gods don’t understand.”
“I will, Mistress.”
“Then, we return now, to our beds.”
So said Falkow, and then she disappeared from that place, taking Bulerigid with her.
Karite, maker of the four Emissaries, also faded from view.

05: Gun Princess Yuni

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil”. I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries. In this chapter I will discuss the young girl who established the Mercenary Kingdom, Gun Princess Yuni.

Yuni’s Early Life

Gun Princess Yuni was born in a small town near the Grand Surface, an area on the outskirts of Lavato’s great empires. It was so named because it looks more like the barren surface of the moon through a spyglass than anything that belongs on Lavato. It is also referred to as the Great Wastelands or the Great Wastes.

During her early childhood, a violent gang attacked her town and murdered her parents. With no one to care for her, she was abandoned at the age of six on the Grand Surface. There, she saw a world where the only justice was power.

For a girl at the age of 6, the Grand Surface was most likely an extremely inhospitable place.

However, history tells us that in this cruel land, Yuni learned the art of survival.

She soon became an expert handler of firearms, and thus was able to protect herself against a variety of threats. At the time, pistols and rifles where springing up all across Lavato and were becoming a common sight.

young yuniThe reason Yuni was able to become an expert with firearms was because of her encounter with Legendary Drifter Ben MacLachlan. It’s become something of a campfire story, but there are many records that indicate he gave Yuni her signature twin pistols.

Ben MacLachlan himself was a fixture of children’s stories even then. He was known as Fast Draw Ben, Silver Bullet Ben, or Hurricane Ben depending on the region. No one is sure exactly why Yuni caught his eye at that time.

Whatever the reason, he had excellent judgment, as Yuni became one of the greatest gunslingers on the Grand Surface. She became a bounty hunter, and the malicious and wanted criminals of the area all feared her.

Once her fame begin to grow, individuals started popping up claiming that they were Yuni’s companions. The record of this is extensive, and includes diaries, newspaper clippings and correspondence. The reasons behind this phenomenon are also unclear.

One possible explanation lies in the fact that Yuni was known for her friendly disposition. Even if she was just meeting someone for the first time, she would treat them as if they were long-time friends.

It wasn’t her intention, but over time more and more bounty hunters gathered around Yuni, and they eventually became a mercenary band.

In fact, this is the origin of the Mercenary Nation, Heierrat.

Yuni’s Sworn Friends

We can’t discuss Gun Princess Yuni without mentioning her two life-long companions, known as the Gun Princess’ Shield and the Gun Princess’ Sword.

But how did she originally meet these two?

I’d like to take a brief moment to give some details on them here.fierte

The girl who is known as the Gun Princess’ Shield was Shield Coat Fierte. She never left Yuni’s side, and lived to protect her. Their first meeting was when they were both very young.

Fierte was an orphan who was raised by Ben MacLachlan. Local stories say she was the last survivor of a royal family, but there has never been any documents or records that support this.

It’s generally accepted among historians that Fierte and Yuni met while Ben was passing his gun techniques down to Yuni. That was when they first became friends.

Fierte’s personality was the total opposite of Yuni’s. She was the silent sarcastic type, and never spoke more than a word or two to anyone she did not know well. It was said that she was a girl who wore a steel mask.

A few years after Yuni left Ben’s care to live as a bounty hunter, the two were reunited as competitors. They were both after the same wanted criminal.

Whatever happened during that encounter, it is documented that Fierte arrived with Ben, and left with Yuni. From then on, Fierte would not leave her side until the end of her life.

The one called the Gun Princess’ Sword was a boy named Mizalio. When they first met they were on opposite sides of the law, Yuni being the bounty hunter and Mizalio being the criminal.

At the time, Mizalio was the leader of a gang of thieves that called themselves The Wasteland Wolves. It was made up entirely by orphan boys who had been disturbing the peace.

The adults of their town were having such a hard time trying to control them, that they soon put a bounty on their heads. That was when Yuni showed up, offering to capture them.

It was a big gang, but after all they were only a group of amateur boys.

At this point Yuni was already a master bounty hunter who had caught several hardened criminals. The Wasteland Wolves were no match for her.

MizalioBut when Yuni found out they were just a group of boys, she decided not to turn them in as wanted criminals. Instead, she let all of them go free.

Mizalio was so astonished by her strength that he ended up following her around to figure out why she was so strong.

Local stories say that Fierte and Mizalio got along like a dog and a monkey. They were always arguing, but Fierte’s sharp tongue and icy stare always left Mizalio speechless at the end.

Despite following Yuni around, Mizalio had no skills whatsoever. However, through force of his own will he eventually learned to generate magic swords from spirit energy, and become a famous swordsman.

The Purpose of Heierrat’s Establishment

A question of much debate among scholars is: Why did Yuni think of establishing the country of Heierrat?I believe it’s related to her personal history.

From when the establishment of Heierrat first appeared in newspapers, correspondence and other documentation, the news always was accompanied by quotes from Yuni herself, saying she wished for a place where those without homes could live in peace or a peaceful country for anyone, despite race or creed.

Then why would such a place be known as the Home of Mercenaries?

Her Mercenary soldiers thought the true purpose of their occupation was to keep peace and fight for the peace of other nations. They were wanderers, because they didn’t have the power to fight for themselves. It was impossible to establish a town, only to have it destroyed by evil forces while all the fighting men were off handling someone else’s war.

The people of the wastelands also valued independent thought, and felt that all the problems happening in Lavato’s great kingdoms were caused by leaders abusing their power.

This is what the people believed, and what Yuni believed herself.

So Heierrat was the dream of a girl without a homeland, a hope of a peaceful place for mercenaries to live and come home to.

So exactly what events transpired that led to Heierrat’s establishment? In my next essay, I will directly address establishment of Mercenary Kingdom Heierrat.

04: Lion Baron Zagar and Abyss Centaur Dical

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil.” I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries. In this chapter I will discuss the leader of the Solar Kingdom’s military forces, Lion Baron Zagar, and the leader of the Duchy of Crest’s military forces, Abyss Centaur Dical.

Where They Began

As is widely known, these two were generals of opposing nations during the War of the Sun and Moon. So how was it that they called each other “friend”?

Let’s start by talking about each of their origins.

The highest ranked General of the Solar Kingdom, Zagar, was the oldest son of the Pride family. The Pride family was at the time a famous bloodline of soldiers, although now it has been eclipsed by the personal legend of Zagar himself.

Within the family, he was thought to be a genius because he achieved the rank of general at such a young age.

Both his strategies on the battlefield and his prowess in personal physical combat were born from the tremendous amount of historical knowledge that he had learned in his youth.

Whichever feature of a soldier, knight or general you find important, Zagar excelled at it. He was a first class general, and is widely known as one of the greatest commanders at any level in the entire history of the Solar Kingdom.

But even a living legend like him began as a military academy student in his youth.

The other students in the academy were no match for him, and even the teachers had to stay alert or he would defeat them also.

But even for someone like young Zagar, there was an instructor that he could not compete with.

This was the high commander of the Crest army, Dical.

Zagar was not an arrogant youth, but he was shocked when Dical used his superior ability to defeat him. It had simply never occurred to Zagar that someone so much stronger than him could exist.

From that day forward, Zagar looked up to Dical as a teacher and mentor. It is said that during his years as a student, Zagar would attend at least one of Dical’s lectures every day, trying to absorb as much knowledge and skill from him as possible.

Dical was from a race long forgotten in Lavato, and had already served as a general in the Duchy of Crest for several hundred years before Zagar was born. He was quite literally a living legend, and if his presence was confirmed on the battlefield, the enemy would often retreat immediately.

It may be hard to imagine from his frightful appearance, but he was kind and had a good-natured personality. He loved talking to children and teaching them when his duties allowed it.

During a time of peace between Crest and the Solar Kingdom, he was asked to become an instructor at a military school, a facility designated to raise the next generation of generals. For him this was an opportunity that could not be missed, and he ended up taking the position after only two letters passed between him and the headmaster.

Zagar vanillaHowever, because his teachings were so strict, most of the military school’s students considered him to be an evil ogre.

There was only one student who was able to keep up with his lessons and excel.

Of course, this student was Zagar.

Dical was surprised by Zagar’s ability, and wanted to teach him every bit of history, strategy and skill he could. In no time, Zagar was assigned all manner of extra classwork and assignments from Dical.

Just a few years after Zagar graduated from the academy, he worked himself up to the rank of general in the Solar Kingdom’s armed forces.

Even after graduation, he kept in contact with Dical by letters. Their relationship changed from teacher and student to that of friends and equals.

In the War of the Sun and Moon…These were peaceful times, but unfortunately they did not last. Due to a variety of circumstances, tensions began to form between their two countries, the Solar Kingdom of Folrart and the Duchy of Crest.

Before the dispute between these two countries escalated, Zagar advised Prince Verlaat against entering into conflict with the Duchy of Crest.

Records state this advice was given on purely political grounds, but many historians believe it was a request from Zagar’s sworn friend, Dical.

My personal opinion is that such a thing is impossible.

This is because, while we know that Zagar tried to prevent disputes dicalwith the Duchy of Crest many times at court, Dical was completely divorced from politics. There is no record or indication of Dical contributing to politics anywhere in history.

Dical stated his advice simply, and only on direct military matters in times of war. He always followed his master’s direction without hesitation, and did so effectively.

However, this does not mean that Dical had no feelings concerning the possibility that he would have to fight with Zagar.

Out of all the great events in history he has been involved in directly, there was only one time when he let his humanity show. This was the first time he and Zagar, now high commander of all the Solar Kingdom’s forces, met each other face to face on the battlefield for the first time at “The Battle of the Borderlands.”
The Battle of the Borderlands

AnnaroseThe only bloodless battle of the War of the Sun and Moon was The Battle of the Borderlands. Prince Verlaat, escorted by Zagar, was on his way to confer with the Ruler of Crest, Eskatia. Unfortunately, due to a ploy by Annarose, Verlaat and his men were surrounded completely by the armies of Crest with no way to retreat. This trap is considered to be one of the great predicaments that stood against Verlaat during the War of the Sun and Moon.

However, Dical did not press forward with his solders, and eventually let Verlaat and the others retreat without any bloodshed.

There are so many unanswered questions and loose ends regarding this event that it’s difficult to know exactly what happened. Many historians say there may have been some kind of negotiation beforehand, for example.

We do know that the Crest army had Verlaat completely surrounded. The men looked to Dical for the final order to charge, but Dical did not give any command, nor did he move the slightest muscle for two straight days.

One of Dical’s aids who was keeping records during this event described the scene as follows: “At that time, Lord Dical was silent and did not say the slightest word. However, his overwhelming presence gripped everyone, and it seemed to me as if he was trying to determine something that meant the very future to him and our great Duchy.”

It’s still a mystery why Dical did not take any military action, but it gave Verlaat and the others the opportunity they needed to retreat.

Despite the histories and supporting documents that have survived from that day, it is still unknown why Dical didn’t make a move, but one thing is certain. From this point on, Dical begins to obstruct the actions of Annarose whenever possible.

After much research, I have developed the theory that on this day Dical was considering all the events that had occurred in the war so far, and finally realized Annarose’s true identity.

Fortunately, Zagar’s notes and letters from this time have survived. Perhaps by studying them carefully we might find the clues we need to be sure of the reasons behind Dical’s mysterious actions.

For my next essay I will address one of the youngest nations on Lavato, Mercenary Nation Heierrat, and the founder of this nation, Gun Princess Yuni.

03: Ruler of Crest Eskatia

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil.” I am penning this history to give This chapter will cover the wife of Solar Prince Verlaat, who has been known to history as both a devil and a saint. My subject is the Ruler of Crest, named Eskatia.

Ruler of Crest Eskatia

Esaktia is famous for two things. She took the role of the invader in the War of the Sun and Moon, and she was also the wife of Solar Prince Verlaat. Very little is known about the details of her life outside these two events.

I’ll begin with what is known about her personal life.

Ruler of Crest Eskatia was the only child of her Father, Hydenyubel, and her Mother, Diara.

Hydenyubel and Diara were well known for having an age difference of 30 years between them. When their marriage was announced, it was something of a scandal and the royal family was against it. But Hydenyubel was a such a sincere individual that he spent months traveling personally to every one of his relatives and feudal lords, convincing them one at a time.

Eskatia was the daughter born from this couple and their infamous age gap. She was raised with tender love from the both of them and grew up happily.

Even though she was a woman, she was an enthusiastic and energetic fencer with a talent for strategizing. She devoted herself to defending her people from a young age. In countless surviving texts and letters she is described as a wonderful woman by local and traveler alike.

eskatiaMost likely, The Messenger of Chaos, Elgandi, was able to take advantage of her because of her naive heart, set on defending the people.

It is hard to believe that the woman who is considered to be one of the wisest monarchs in history, was the direct cause of the War of the Sun and Moon when she was younger.

But even during the darkest times of war, Eskatia did not plunder or exploit the lands she occupied. She ruled them and their people as equals to the subjects of Crest.

Even after Eskatia married Verlaat and began living in the Solar Kingdom, she heavily influenced the politics of both kingdoms. It has been widely documented that Eskatia was always the power behind Verlaat’s throne.

The Warriors that Protect Eskatia

Among Eskatia’s ranks were a number of legendary warriors that had served the Duchy since the time of her father, Hydenyubel.

Of all these warriors, the most renowned is undoubtedly Abyss Centaur Dical.

Dical is the descendent of an ancient Centaur clan that has been serving the Duchy of Crest for hundreds of years. In the time of Eskatia, he held the rank of general.

The secret of Dical’s longevity is a mystery but local stories say it is related to intervention by an unknown figure known as “the Lord of the Dead” or sometimes, “Zugateroza.”

It is said that Dical could race through the enemy army as if they weren’t even there, and defeat several hundred soldiers alone if he wished. His exploits earned him the names “the Black Hurricane” and “the Demon of the Battlefield.” His fame spread far beyond Crest, and warriors from all the nearby countries feared his name.

Strangely, Dical was best friends with the commander of all the military forces of the Solar Kingdom, Zagar.dical

After the great war started, they preferred not to fight each other. Many times when their troops were likely to clash directly during the war, it was prevented by a convenient accident. For example, one of their armies would be inexplicably delayed while marching, or the other would be caught up fighting another troop. Because of this, it was rumored they had a secret agreement.

Near the end of the war, the Abyssal Forces surfaced as the true enemies. After that, it was said that Zagar and Dical fought each other in earnest.

But once the fighting drew to a close and the War of the Sun and Moon War ended, Dical disappeared and he never appears on the pages of history again.

Eskatia later described Dical as a “clumsy warrior whose path was the protection of Lavato, and the only thing he knew how to do was charge down that path.”

The Reasons Behind the War of the Sun and Moon

Although she would become a wise monarch, Eskatia is the one who triggered what is arguably one of the worst wars in Lavato’s history, the War of the Sun and Moon. Abyssal Messenger Annarose was orchestrating the scheme behind the scenes, but let’s focus on why Eskatia started the war for now.

As has been discussed at length, the War of the Sun and Moon began when the famous Knights of Crest were sent by the Duchy into the neighboring Kingdom of Baltemet. There is plenty of documentation that confirms the one who ordered this was Eskatia herself.

The official story is that the Cult of Argulus, an order responsible for heinous crimes in the Duchy of Crest, crossed the border and fled to the Kingdom of Baltemet. In actuality, the existence of this cult has never been confirmed. As a cult, it is likely they kept no records or other evidence of their existence. Because of this, modern historians assume that this was a fictitious group invented by Annarose, or possibly controlled by her.

However, if one analyzes the politics of Eskatia before and after the war, it is hard to believe that she would invade a neighboring country over the actions of a simple cult. Most scholars agree that there must have been a deeper reason behind it, perhaps a personal one.

One theory is that Eskatia’s handmaids, many who had been with her for her entire life, were massacred by a person or persons from the Order of Argulus. As much as this sounds more like fiction than history, the source is reliable.

When knights from the Duchy of Crest crossed over into Baltemet, Baltemet’s soldiers retaliated in full force.

But that decisive action of Baltemet Kingdom only triggered the mobilization of Crest’s main military force.

When the Knights of Crest were attacked, the Duchy’s armies poured over the border and occupied two thirds of Baltemet Kingdom in just a few days.

Baltemet Kingdom, having almost instantly lost much of its lands, looked to its allied powers for relief.

Many nations answered, most notably the small but powerful Kingdom of Beltorat, ruled by the steady hand of its king, Dragoneye Ainhazard.

At this, the Duchy of Crest had no option but to prepare for all-out war.

With their overwhelming military forces and the special Augmented Soldiers created and personally led by Annarose, the Duchy of crest gained a distinct advantage.

When the Battle of Baltemet signaled the fall of the smaller nation’s last stronghold, the Solar Kingdom decided to become directly involved. At that moment, the war become one of the two biggest wars in Lavato’s history.

However, before the Solar Kingdom officially declared war, Eskatia and Verlaat had a secret meeting in Regus, the Wizard Kingdom.

Apparently, this was because Eskatia wanted to make a formal request that the Solar Kingdom stay out of the war effort.

verlaatAs history tells us, the conference was a failure and the Solar Kingdom did indeed become involved.

Still, it is important to note that some sources maintain the conference was a success and Verlaat promised not to get involved in the war. But within days, a troop from the Duchy of Crest’s main army invaded a town that fell within the Solar Kingdom’s territory, possibly by mistake. After that, Verlaat had no choice.

It is also widely known that Verlaat made several efforts to confer with Eskatia during the war, attempting to convince her to withdraw and bring an end to the fighting.

As for Eskatia, she made an effort to listen what he had to say, and apparently there were many occasions where the two discussed each other’s countries.

These meetings are compelling, but there is no evidence that they were the impetus for their eventual marriage. It is generally accepted that something else must have happened beyond the ears of history that led these two to trust one another.

It is likely that in the royal archives of the Solar Kingdom there are records on this, but unfortunately it is forbidden to read the personal documents of the royal family.

Ruler of Crest Eskatia was thought to be an excellent politician who always had the best interest of her people in mind, but because of her country’s position and the evils hidden in her own castle, she was forced to walk the path of an invader.

Similarly, despite Solar Prince Verlaat’s good intentions, he was pulled in entrenched in this bloody war.

Thankfully, these two were able to join their forces and fight side by side against the true evil, the Envoy of Chaos. This was because of their advisers, the noble minded warriors who served each nation.

The contents of my next essay will cover the greatest of these warriors, Lion Baron Zagar and Abyss Centaur Dical.

02: The Solar Prince Verlaat

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil.” I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries.
In this set of Biographies, I would like to discuss a person who holds a very important position in Lavato’s history, Solar Prince Verlaat.

Solar Prince Verlaat

We talked about Verlaat’s role in our previous section on the Solar Kingdom, but now let’s review his personal history.
Solar Prince Verlaat was the second child of King Aldoric and Emia. He had an older half-brother named Alphonce, who was born of a different mother.

verlaatThe Solar Kingdom practices primogeniture, so normally the firstborn would be heir to the throne. However, Verlaat’s case was an exception. The Pope of the Church of the True God, the most influential voice in all of Folrart, sent an unprecedented message demanding that Verlaat be granted the throne, as “the inheritor of the Sun’s will.”

After much debate, the secular voices could not overturn the Pope’s decree, and Verlaat was named as the heir to the throne.

As for Alphonce, he was educated and trained to be his younger brother’s double for security purposes, a position considered by many to be gravely insulting.

Alphonce was loved by the people and officials of the day wrote of his promise and his ability to be a good and wise king. It is said that when he was told about this decision, he offered no opposition at all and just accepted it.

After this, the pair of fated brothers grew up, never quarreling with each other. It is said that they gained great skill, experience, and strong hearts.

But during the very year that Verlaat turned 18 years old, a tragic incident changed their lives and the history of Lavato forever.

A Father’s Death, a Brother’s Disappearance
It was the year that Verlaat turned 18 years of age.King Aldoric, who was known to both his own subjects and to those of neighboring countries as “the People’s King,” died a mysterious death in his bedroom.Any information about his cause of death has been swallowed up by darkness. Absolutely nothing has survived.

But directly afterwards, Alphonce vanishes.alphonce

Because of this, many historical records surmise this event might have been a murder perpetrated by Alphonce.

At the time, no one raised any formal objections to this theory. However, in recent years several historians have begun researching alternate theories, maintaining that it’s possible that Alphonce did not murder his father, but instead he left the Solar kingdom for some other reason.

The reason why these theories have taken root is because several documents surfaced that were previously unknown in the Solar Kingdom. These documents discuss the matter of the “Fallen Sun,” and the identity of the one who finally defeated the Emperor of the Silver Sun, Verlaat, ending his rampage. This was none other than Exart the Hero, the son of Alphonce.

According to several records and accounts, Alphonce was a strict but kind father who taught Exart to fight for the people.

In return, Exart looked up to his father and held great respect for him. Many times he said that if not for his father, he would not be the man he was.

It is also said that Exart wielded two Star Blades when he fought against Verlaat.

Recently surfacing theories speculate these two blades were Claevolg and Progura.

Concerning this matter, we will research further during our section on Alphonce.

Beginning of the War of the Sun and Moon and the relationship with the Ruler of Crest, Eskatia.

Shortly after Verlaat took the throne, he was faced with the War of the Sun and Moon, which is thought to be either the first or second largest of all the Great Wars.

The War of the Sun and Moon began when soldiers from the Duchy of Crest invaded the territory of the neighboring Kingdom of Baltemet.

On this questionable movement of troops, the Duchy of Crest issued an official decree, stating they had been receiving reports that a dangerous criminal had escaped from their country and crossed over into Baltemet controlled territory. They also maintained that they had been in contact with the Baltemet ambassador before advancing.

It is now clear that in truth this was a hoax by Annarose, a disciple of Messenger of Chaos Elgandi.

This event triggered a series of disputes between the two territories, a situation that escalates drastically with the involvement of Baltemet’s ally, the Solar Kingdom of Folrart.

eskatiaDuring this battle, a single pair of legendary heroes was born.

These two individuals, one man and one woman, are the ones who brought peace to the Solar Kingdom and to the Duchy of Crest by defeating the Messenger of Chaos, Elgandi.

They were Solar Prince Verlaat and the Ruler of Crest, Eskatia.

At the conclusion of the War of the Sun and Moon, the two of them are immediately married.

At the very end, however, the couple met each other on the battlefield as enemies. Eskatia, who at the time was called the Moon Princess, led the Duchy of Crest to war against the Emperor of the Silver Sun, Verlaat.

Historians have many unanswered questions left regarding how the pair fell in love originally during the War of the Sun and Moon.

Many theories have circulated over the years. For example, that they had been deeply in love even before the first war, or that their relationship was fraudulent, a hoax by Eskatia as she arranged their eventual confrontation during the War of Emperor of the Silver Sun.

Out of all these theories, the one with the most evidence is the possibility that Verlaat was captured and held as a prisoner during the War of the Sun and Moon.

During that time, it’s possible that a relationship developed between the two.

In the pages of history, the two names always found alongside Verlaat are Alphonce and Eskatia.

Let’s move on from Verlaat for now. In our next section, I will begin a discussion of the Ruler of Crest, Eskatia.

It’s difficult to see that she is a woman when looking at her image in full armor, but by talking about this duchess and her surroundings, we will get another perspective on the War of the Sun and Moon. Also, we will be able to go further into what happened between Verlaat and Eskatia.

01: The Solar Kingdom of Folrart

Despite our shining civilizations, Lavato is still a world of mysteries.

The greatest mysteries of all undeniably revolve around the matter of “Alteil.” I am penning this history to give the strategists of Alteil, the Iczers, a chance to better comprehend these mysteries. In this set of Biographies, I will be discussing my home country, the Solar Kingdom of Folrart. This kingdom and most heroes connected to it fall under the influence of Refess.

The Solar Kingdom is…

The Solar Kingdom was founded as the seat of the Church of the True God, the most widespread religion in Lavato. It is known as one of the youngest and most influential kingdoms in the world.flag of folrart

The first king, Gazaeel, began as a knight and high council member of the Great Military Nation of Zabarie. At the time, it was one of the most powerful nations on Lavato. Gazaeel is legendary for his enthusiastic support of the Church of the True God.

The founding idea of the Church of the True God is that everyone who believes in God will be saved. This may seem too general, but for the devastated people of Lavato during that age, it struck a chord in their hearts and minds.

In no time, their number of followers began increasing in leaps and bounds. Gazaeel was a strong knight, but it is said that he still possessed a kind heart. Every time they went out to war and invaded another town, his heart cried out in pain. We know that the people worshiped Gazaeel as a great hero, and he became a symbol to the masses. It is also clear that a short time later, he established his own kingdom based on this popularity. The question is, how did this come to pass? Unfortunately, at this point we have yet to find any records detailing these events.

The actual objectives of the Church of the True God did not come to light until Solar Prince Verlaat’s fall from grace as the “Fallen Sun.” He reinvented himself as the Emperor of the Silver Sun and began his bloody campaign for world unification.

The famous men and women of the Solar Kingdom

Now let us go into detail about some of the famous men and women of the Solar Kingdom who play a large part in Alteil.

verlaatWe’ll start with Solar Prince Verlaat, Lion Baron Zagar, and Saber Saint Lapierre.

These are the three central figures who brought the War of the Sun and Moon to an end. Solar Prince Verlaat was the son of King Aldoric and his wife Emia. He also had an older brother named Alphonce. He was given the title Solar Prince because the sun did not set on the day he was born, not even during nighttime. Because of this amazing phenomenon, the Church of the True God took immediate action and Verlaat’s older brother, Alphonce, was stripped of his right to the throne. From this moment on, Verlaat’s fate was closely bound to his brother’s. This fate returned to haunt Verlaat repeatedly throughout his life. If the records of his death are to be believed, we could say it haunted him until his dying day. The year Verlaat turned 18 years old he ascended the throne and became king. This was because Aldoric, the king universally loved by the people and Verlaat’s father, had suddenly died shortly before. Around the same time, his brother Alphonce disappeared without warning. Verlaat was left all alone with his sickly mother. During this troubling time, the one who really supported him was Lion Baron Zagar. It is also known that Verlaat’s sword was given the name “Solar Blade Claevolg” at the close of the War of the Sun and Moon. Before that, it was a weapon with no name. The one who gave this sword to Verlaat was the enigmatic Night Walker Riza, who evidently became his swordsmaster. Due to this, it is believed that this weapon has mystical powers.

Lion Baron Zagar was the unifying symbol of Folrart’s military Zagar vanillaforces. He had been born to a prestigious family that had served the kings of the Solar Kingdom for many generations. By the time Verlaat became king, Zagar was already the general in command of all the kingdom’s armies. He has left such an impact that it is likely his name will never be forgotten. His history is already taught to young scholars from all over Lavato, and he has even become the stuff of popular children’s stories. During the War of the Sun and Moon, he supported Verlaat through thick and thin and played an instrumental role in bringing the fighting to an end. However, once Verlaat became known as the “Fallen Sun,” Zagar realized he was a threat to future of the world. In secret, Zagar began communicating with the Verlaat Resistance Faction. It is said that Verlaat witnessed Zagar doing so, and struck him down on the spot. All that we know for sure is that at this time, Lion Baron Zagar disappeared from the pages of history. However, by the time he disappeared, he had already told the Verlaat Resistance Faction what they needed to know. As a result, this marked the beginning of a downwards spiral for Verlaat, ending in his death.

(Note: There has never been any official records or solid evidence confirming Verlaat’s death.)
After this tragic series of incidents, Zagar’s son, Lion Prince Forte, became the new king of the Solar Kingdom. Zagar and his elite forces were legendary for being able to stage a comeback on the battlefield. In fact, it is said that they could only fight at their full potential if there was no other way out. In short, Zagar was a heroic general whose abilities where beyond value. Not just in Folrart, but all over Lavato he is considered a famous hero.

lapierre vanillaThere was one other hero of Folrart who is known in children’s stories all over the world, like Zagar. She was a beautiful priestess and an unmatched swordswoman. Her name was Lapierre, captain of the Shrine Knights, also known as Saber Saint Lapierre. She was famous for having a fiery, outgoing personality that is not typical of a priestess. She would eat, drink and laugh alongside the people, and even now it is common to tell a tomboy that she is a real “Lapierre girl.” Despite her high rank in the Church of the True God and her status as a respected follower, she served the throne of the Solar Kingdom as captain of its Shrine Knights. It was said that Lapierre would sometimes ignore her duties as captain and disappear to relax among the people, leading to countless difficulties for those who worked under her. The free and uninhibited Lapierre was able to stay as captain of the Shrine Knights without getting into serious trouble because Zagar would always put his support behind her. Lapierre is the one who secured victory in the “Battle of the Holy Realm,” which was the turning point in the War of the Sun and Moon. It is common wisdom that if Lapierre wasn’t in command on that day, the War of the Sun and Moon would have lasted much longer. Lapierre possesses a weapon called Lantylit. It is a holy weapon granted by the highest-ranking member of the Church, and only to its most excellent warrior. It is said that this weapon’s form depends on the will and the temperament of its owner. There are numerous records of events when Lapierre wielded this weapon, and it took the form of a whip. Lapierre barely made an appearance during the tragic War of the Emperor of the Silver Sun. However, she played a pivotal part that led to the end of the war. During the most violent battles, she worked behind the scenes to prevent the Shrine Knights from being dispatched. Many say this simple act changed the course of the fighting. Unfortunately, when it was time for Lapierre to step down and appoint her successor, she chose Swordswoman of the True Light, Ishtar. Ishtar became the lover of Emperor of the Silver Sun, Verlaat, and stayed by his side until the very end.

(Note: As with Verlaat, there are no actual records or evidence of her death.)

This concludes my brief overview of the Solar Kingdom of Folrart. The Solar Kingdom is centered entirely around religion. The cause of Verlaat’s fall and his becoming the Emperor of the Silver Sun is directly related to the Church of the True God, and the real goals behind its existence. So next time I would like to focus on Solar Prince Verlaat and those individuals closest to him. To explain him properly, we’ll have to explore many of the key figures from the Duchy of Crest, so there will be no shortage of material. Secretary of the Solar Kingdom, Lazard Bauses The next chapter of the Lavato Biographies will cover Solar Prince Verlaat and those associated with him.

The great sage, Raste, once wrote, “All beings are born of two things: a soul, which gives the being its nature, and the world, which gives the being its face.” As an Iczer, it’s important to learn all you can about the forces you command in battle. Since you cannot look into a being’s soul, I suggest you start by learning about the world of Lavato. To this end, I have compiled the following collection of my writings and the writings of my colleagues.
